You can start 6 weeks early in pots but we find they do best if direct sown in the garden in the spring after your last frost.  In the spring work your garden soil 6 deep and scatter seeds lightly (one packet will cover around 30 square feet) and cover lightly with peat or compost.   Once your plants are 8 tall Cosmos will produce more flowers if you pinch, or cut, the top 3 of the plant off (just above a leaf set).
